Tent Rental in Boston

What to expect when renting a tent in Boston, from Nor'easters to Cape Cod wedding logistics.

The Boston Market

Boston has a high-demand but short tent rental season, running May through October. September and early October are the most popular months, with fall foliage driving a significant portion of the wedding market. June and September dates book up by the previous December.

The market has several established companies that have operated for decades, plus newer operations riding the boom in outdoor weddings. Most companies serve the full eastern Massachusetts corridor from the North Shore down through the South Shore and out to the Cape. Some specialize in specific regions, particularly Cape Cod and the Islands, which have their own logistics challenges.

Weather and Seasons

New England weather is unpredictable at best. A perfect 72°F September day can turn to a 55°F drizzle by evening. Rain is possible any month of the season, and coastal venues get wind off the Atlantic that makes exposed installations tricky.

Sidewalls are standard on every quote. You might not use them, but not having them is a gamble no experienced company will let you take.

September and October events need heating on standby. Evenings regularly drop into the 50s, and once the sun sets the temperature falls fast.

Coastal wind is real. Cape Cod, the North Shore and waterfront venues need frame or clear span tents. Pole tents in exposed locations are risky.

Humidity in July and August can make tents uncomfortable. Fans are the minimum. For formal events with 150+ guests, AC keeps things tolerable.

May events are a coin flip. You might get 75°F and sun, or 50°F and rain. Plan for both and budget for heating just in case.

Cape Cod and the Islands

Cape Cod is the epicenter of New England tent weddings. Chatham, Brewster, Wellfleet and the upper Cape towns host hundreds of tent events every season. The Cape has its own rental companies, and mainland companies that serve the Cape add ferry or bridge-crossing logistics. Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are another level. Everything goes by ferry, and availability is extremely limited. Book island dates 12+ months ahead.

Cape Cod towns have their own permitting rules. Some require neighbor notification for tent installations, and several towns restrict event sizes. Check with the local building department early in your planning.

North Shore and Metro West

The North Shore, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Ipswich, Beverly Farms and Rockport, has the estate properties and waterfront venues that attract high-end tent weddings. These are older properties with established gardens and lawns, good for sailcloth and pole tents. Metro West towns like Wellesley, Dover, Weston and Concord offer similar estate-style settings closer to the city. The Berkshires, a 2-3 hour drive west, are growing as a tent wedding destination with mountain and farm venues.

Tips for Renting in Boston

Book 10-12 months ahead for September and October. Fall foliage season is the most competitive booking window in New England.

Get quotes from both local and regional companies. Cape Cod has specialists who know the terrain, but Boston metro companies are worth including in your search.

Plan for rain, always. No experienced New England event planner skips sidewalls. The rental company should include them in the base quote.

Ask about their setup schedule. New England weather windows can be tight, and a company that sets up Thursday for a Saturday event gives you more flexibility than a Friday crew.

Check parking and access. Many North Shore and Cape properties have narrow driveways. Confirm that delivery trucks can reach the setup area without tearing up the lawn.
